In the traditional sense, a classic book is one written in ancient Greece or ancient Rome The word “classic” may, however, also be applied to literature and other art that is widely considered a model of its form.

Some authors who have written classics are Mark Twain, Ambrose Bierce, Joseph Conrad, Lewis Carroll, Jonathan Swift, William Shakespeare, Geoffrey Chaucer, Miguel Cervantes, Voltaire, Denis Diderot, Johann Wolfgang Goethe, Niccolò Machiavelli, Henrik Ibsen, August Strindberg, Bolesław Prus, Ignacy Krasicki, Anton Chekhov, Leo Tolstoy, Cao Xueqin, Lao Zi (Lao Tzu), Confucius and Murasaki.

In this sense, classics comprise what some call a “canon” of world literature. A matter of much dispute is what belongs in the canon of Western literature and art.

Not exactly sure what you mean by classical. I think of Mark Twain, H.G. Wells, Jules Verne, Charles Dickens, Robert Stevenson, William Bligh, Daniel Defoe, Alexandre Dumas and many more. Hope some of this helps.

You see, you are asking too broad a question. At least you should ask countries, region or something more restricted. I can give you some tips by countries. Russia (they had very good classics): Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, Gogol, Chekhov. France: Victor Hugo, Flaubert, Balsac British: Charles Dickens, William Blake. Italy: Dante Alighieri, Giovani Boccacio. Now the question is also do yo really mean “period” and not just classic authors, because then the situation is different.

Did it make sense? If not you can contact me back.

Classical usually refers to ancient Greek and Roman authors. Even if you restrict it to this the list could be long. The absolute key authors, those sited the most, would be Homer for Greek literature, and Virgil for the Roman. You could include the dramas of Aeschylus, the comedies of Sophocles, the philosophy of Plato and Aristotle, the Metamorphoses of Ovid, the plays of Seneca, the histories of Herodotus and Tacitus.
