The old testament was written and compiled by the Jews. It is the Christian faith that Christianity is a continuation of Judaism. The new testament is a collection of writings and teachings of the earliest leaders of the Christian Church.

If you want some facts read “A Case for Christ” by Lee Strobel.

There is a chapter in there that talks about what you are asking and can probably explain it better than any of us on Y!A can.

The Bible was not created by anyone one person. It was written by dozens of people from many walks of like (men, women, rich, poor, warriors, farmers, etc). It was written over the course of 1000′s of years.

The Bible was written over a period of about 1500 years (give or take; tradition puts at being written between the 15th century BC and the end of the 1st century AD), by roughly 40 different people, in three different languages (Aramaic, Hebrew, and Greek).

I personally believe it because of what I get from it, and how many answers about life I receive from it. I can’t speak for anyone else. All of us have different reasons for believing.

The Bible is a collection of books, written over several thousand years.

The first five (known as the Pentateuch, or by Jews, the Torah) was supposedly written by Moses, although his death is covered in the 5th book – a neat trick! Other books were “written” by prophets, and so on. I put written in quotes as originally, they were oral, only becoming written down in later years. These writings were made until around 150BC.

Then, Jesus came, and some people wrote about him, and activities of the early Church. Part of this was letters to various churches, many of them by Paul. These were treasured letters, read over and over again, and copied down when they wore out. Copies would be sent to other churches as well.

For much of this time, Christian Church was underground, until finally, the Emperor Constantine sponsored conferences to figure out just what Christianity was, and to solve some disputes that had arisen between different factions. It was around this time when committees made up of bishops from all over, with others, recognized “officially” what books should be “canon,” and what should not. There was a fair degree of agreement, but not complete. Most (but not all) Protestants understand a Bible of 66 books. Some (Roman Catholics, Anglicans, and others) have 72. Orthodox churches have others as well. These differences are not major however; usually very small books (a few pages) or a chapter or two in other books.

As for the belief: Christians believe that the writings were inspired from God. There are many religious writings (the library in the seminary I went to had over 40,000 books), but some are considered very, very special, and the books of the Bible have been pretty much universally recognized as special, and worthy of study. Christians call the Bible the “Word of God.” This does not mean “words of God” (although this issue confuses many!), but Word, as in the doings or actions of God (from the Greek work “logos”). This makes the Bible worthy of belief – not as a book of literal truths for all Christians (although Fundamentalist Christians accept it as such), but as a book containing Truth.
