a howitzer is a type of cannon. it uses munitions as opposed to classic cannons which used various types of balls. howitzers load from the rear and have recoil suppression. classic cannons load in front and recoil wildly. there are cannons that do load from the rear without recoil suppression; they are generally post civil war era and mounted on wheels for ease of transport . these also use munitions and some have rifling like the howitzer.

guns are hand held, rifled weapons that load at rear or under neath, come in many ballistic sizes, as well as revolver and semi- automatic.

most types of fully automatic weapons are rifles of some sort, however there are people who alter semi automatic hand guns illegally.

Traditionally a howitzer has a short barrel. That’s it. That is the definition. Many people think a howitzer has to be capable of high elevation fire but in the strict definition of the term that is not mentioned.

A gun is used for low-angle fire and typically has a long barrel firing and medium to high velocities.

Today most artillery are referred to as gun-howitzers as they combine features traditionally associated with both types.
