The best way to clean a lens is to use a can of Velocity, Dust Remover Spray from Radio Shack. Just blow any dust on the lens right off.

Occassionally, you might do something stupid like touch the lens with your hands. That requires more drastic measures. Buy a lens cleaning kit from the electronics section of any major department store. This is basically a non-water based solvent that evaporates completely and a special cloth that does not leave behind particles on the lens. I will tell you though. You better be careful not to wipe the lens vigorously when their are any particles on it or you will scratch the lens. Lenses are expensive. You could easily create a $ 500 paperweight doing this.

It is far better to just treat the lens with respect in the first place.

use a recommended cleaning cloth and solution for lenses. some lenes are coated with a chromatic coating for color abberation reduction- no rainbow effect. Be carfull not to scratch coating .

I’ve had that lens for several years, and am very happy with it. Here’s how to clean your lens and keep it clean:

First, buy a protective/uv filter. This is a clear glass thingummy that screws onto the front of your lens. Keep this on ALL THE TIME. Don’t ever take it off. If you want different filters, attach them to the front of this filter. It won’t affect the pictures, and it will keep the front element of your lens safe and clean! The B + W or Hoya filters in the $ 100 range are fine, although there are better ones available.

After you get your filter in the mail, you need to clean the actual lens before putting it on. Use pec-pads and a methanol-based cleaning fluid (that will evaporate almost instantly with no residue). Use single wipes with the pads; don’t go back and forth with the same pad, because you can pick up dust and scratch the coating. Here are some good possibilities:

In the future, you’ll need to clean the front glass of the filter instead of the actual lens. Do NOT blow on the lens or filter, since you’ll get saliva or particulates on it, and definitely don’t use those “canned air” things like Dust Off.
