To begin with, it has NOTHING to do with a large gun- that’s the homonym cannon. However, the word “canon” has several diverse meanings, one of which is particular to the study of literature. Perhaps the primary meaning of “canon” is “a generally accepted principle”, but as applies to Shakespeare it means a group of literary works that represent and define a genre of writing. As the “James Bond” books help set apart the genre of “international spy” fiction, so do Shakespeare, Marlowe and a few others delineate Elizabethan English drama.
